On Saturday March 12th, the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) of the University of Chile received the families of the new students, thus answering the call of the Berauchefian community to know the place where their sons and daughters will study and to talk with FCFM´s professors and authorities.
“You and we are collaborators in this new stage. Your sons and daughters are the protagonists”. With these words, Dean Patricio Aceituno introduced the Open Doors Day, event held annually by the FCFM so the new Beauchefians’ parents get familiar with the world the Beauchef Campus, the place where they will be for the next six years, has to offer.
Nearly 400 people answered this invitation. At the day’s opening, the Dean informed about the induction and welcome activities at Carén lagoon and then introduced the 18 professors (with National Prize winners, teachers with PhDs and MDs obtained in the most prestigious universities of the world and scholars with many years doing research among them) in charge of the 18 guided visits scheduled for the day.
One of the visited facilities was the Robotics lab, part of the AMTC and the Electric Engineering Department. There pre-grad students Kanzo Lobos, Pablo Miranda and Constanza Villegas and grad student Matías Mattamala received several groups of visitors (one of them headed by Dean Aceituno, acting as tour guide) and presented the popular NAO robotic soccer players, participants of the annual RoboCup tournament. The new students’ families watched with delight how those machines played soccer, walk, fall and stand up with no human intervention whatsoever, using only pre-programmed instructions.
